Disney: Next ‘High School Musical’ will be a kindergarten prequel

HSprequel Disney's "High School Musical 3: Senior Year" danced its way to the top of of the weekend box office class with $42 million.  With numbers like that, Disney is not about to let go of this successful franchise. Taking a page out of George Lucas' playbook, Disney has decided to do a prequel that takes place in kindergarten.

"You're going to see what these characters were like as children," says Mark Zoradi, president of Disney's motion-picture group. "You're going to see that Troy was a chronic nose picker and a huge nerd who got beat up by a couple of second graders. There's a great musical number that goes with that scene."

All of the popular "High School Musical" characters will be in the prequel including Chad Danforth who ends up being sent to the school nurse after overdosing on paste. Chad is also beaten up by two girls -- one in a wheel chair -- in his kindergarten classroom.  A young Gabriella will be in the same classroom. Her parents are called to the school after she keeps lifting her dress to show the boys her underwear.

While Disney works out what are expected to be difficult contract issues with Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron for the next sequel, Disney will continue with prequels. Already on the slate is a daycare movie with the same characters. After that, Disney will turn to animation to feature the "High School Musical" characters as unborn fetuses.

CW President Dawn Ostroff, who orchestrated the early season trade, had this to say:

"We wanted to bring a brand new look to the role of 'Nate Archibald.' We needed someone fresh. So we went out on a limb and decided to go after Zac Efron to shake things up a bit. I think our fans will be happy with the trade."

Corbinjustin A trade of this magnitude was attempted last year when Disney wanted to trade "High School's" Corbin Bleu for "American Idol's" Justin Guarini. However, Jamba Juice, Guarini's current employer, did not agree to terms of the proposed trade deal.

Zac Efron wants to star in a ‘Grease ‘ remake

Zac Efron wants to star in a 'Grease' remake.

The 'High School Musical' heartthrob admits he would love to step into John Travolta's shoes as gang leader Danny Zuko in the musical movie, but only with the legendary actor's consent.

Zac - who appeared alongside John in the recent film version of hit musical 'Hairspray' - said: "If John was involved I'd do it. But without his consent there's no way I could ever attempt a role like that. That's too hard, he's just too cool. He's a stud!"

The 20-year-old actor also revealed he is happy to star in more musicals after the success of his Disney movie franchise, and is convinced Hollywood will continue making all-singing, all-dancing films.

Zac added: "I love musicals! I've noticed that various movie studios want to get involved with making musicals and I think it's great. They're making a comeback and so I think there should be more in the pipeline. Any time there's a musical, I'm up for being on board. It's fun."

Zac Efron was a ‘nerd’ in school

Zac Efron was a "nerd" at school.

The 'High School Musical' star admits he wasn't very popular with girls when he was growing up and was never in a cool "clique".

He said: "I didn't get much attention from chicks. I was the short kid in high school. I was, like, 5ft 6in. But as soon as I left and started working then I started to grow up a little bit. I wasn't really the cool guy or the skater dude. I had a group of friends but we weren't like a clique or anything like that. I tried really hard, I got good grades and I was in advanced classes. If you had to call me something you'd probably call me a nerd."

Zac, 20, admits he still isn't comfortable with his heartthrob status since he shot to fame playing Troy Bolton in the hit Disney movies.

He added: "It's OK. Luckily, it's not something I really have to deal with too much. I suppose I would be an OK role model. I don't do much wrong - I'm not really into the Hollywood party scene."
