Emmy Awards Cancelled
The major television networks and the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences made a joint announcement Monday that they are canceling the Emmy Awards. Last night's 60th annual ceremony will be the last for the veritable Hollywood institution.
The decision came, insiders said, after record low ratings for last night's ceremony came in. The Emmys were not only demolished by Sunday Night Football, but also came in behind a re-run of Sunday morning's "Meet the Press" on MSNBC and an open heart surgery on Discovery Health.
"It's time to accept that a celebration of the best TV has to offer is not appealing to TV viewers," the major networks said in a joint statement. "The ratings for last night's Emmys were even worse than for 'Mad Men' and '30 Rock' and all the other critically acclaimed, hugely unpopular shows that won the big awards."
Though it has been officially canceled, some in Hollywood are working on ways to keep the Emmys alive. In addition to lobbying efforts to get HBO or Showtime to pick up the Awards, Fox is proposing a new version of the show where celebrities would win Emmys by competing in a series of events drawn from game shows "The Wall," "Moment of Truth," and "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?"
