Jazmine Sullivan Drops Her Debut
I love Jazmine Sullivan..She's one of the very few raw talents out there. Her music is brutally honest and refreshing!
With her single, “Need U Bad” burning up the radio SOHH chopped it up with up-and-coming soul singer, Jazmine Sullivan, to talk those pesky comparisons to Lauryn Hill, working with Missy Elliott and her debut album, Fearless.
Fearless will be hitting shelves this Tuesday (September 23rd) and Sullivan said the title represents her current state of mind.
“I named [my album] Fearless because that’s who I am right now,” she said. “I’m not afraid to be myself. I’m not afraid to take chances and step outside the box and be different.”
Jazmine didn’t always possess the confidence she’s demonstrating on her J Records debut. As a teenager, she signed to Jive Records but the label wasn’t quite sure what to do with her mature vocals and Jazmine didn’t know how to guide them.
“I was a lot younger with the Jive situation,” she explained. “You’re younger you don’t really know what’s going on. Now definitely I have so much more control. I wrote my whole album. I have executive producer credit on the album.”
Though she was behind most of the records on Fearless, Jazmine did tap her long-time mentor, Missy Elliot, to produce a few songs.
“I’ve known her since I was 13-14,” she said. “She’s really been like a mentor to me. You know just always there and always supporting and ready to lend her talents.”
One of the Jazmine/Missy collaborations was the reggae-tinged first single, “Need U Bad,” which instantly caused fans and critics to compare Jazmine to Grammy award-winning former Fugee, Lauryn Hill. Jazmine says that comparison caught her off guard.
“I was a little surprised because I never got that comparison,” she said. “When I heard Lauryn it shocked me at first but then I had to kinda step back and think about it and said well you know what, the song does have the reggae vibe.”
“I got the comparison and of course I have no problem cause I’m such a big fan of hers,” said the 21-year-old songstress.
Jazmine is hoping that once the public hears more of the songs from Fearless, they’ll realize that she and Ms. Hill have two different styles. For now she’s focusing on releasing the video for her vengeful second single, “Bust Your Windows.”
“I felt like that was a subject that needed to be spoken about,” Jazmine explained. “It’s such real experience that I felt like I should tell that story. I ran into so many men and women who were like, ‘Oh my god we love that song because we’ve been through it,’ or definitely for women if they haven’t been through it they’ve wanted to do it.”
Fearless will hit stores on Tuesday, September 23rd. (From Sohh.com)

DJ AM and Travis Barker in Critical But Stable Condition After Crash
When I heard this news, my heart literally skipped a beat :( Didn't we just see them together at the VMAs?! And it was only a few days ago, that friend forwarded me a clip of one of Travis's famous hip hop mashups! Life is precious...
The doomed crew piloting a Learjet that crashed on takeoff, killing four people and injuring two popular musicians, thought a tire blew as they hurtled down the runway and struggled unsuccessfully to stop the plane, a federal safety official said Sunday. National Transportation Safety Board member Debbie Hersman said a cockpit voice recording of the Friday night crash indicates the crew tried to abort the takeoff, but then signaled the efforts were failing.
"The crew reacted to a sound that was consistent with a tire blowout," Hersman said.
Former Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker and Hollywood star disc jockey DJ AM remained in critical but stable condition Sunday; one of their doctors said he expected them to fully recover.
Two of the musicians' close friends and the plane's pilot and co-pilot were killed when it shot off the end of the runway, ripped through a fence and crossed a highway. It came to rest on an embankment a quarter-mile from the end of the runway, engulfed in flames.
Hersman said no cause of the crash has been determined and the investigation is ongoing. She did say that pieces of tire were recovered about 2,800 feet from where the plane started its takeoff. The runway is 8,600 feet long. The plane was traveling at least 92 mph, its minimum takeoff speed, when the crew thought the tire burst, Hersman said.
One aviation expert said the crew would have had just moments to abort or lift off because such a Learjet needs more than 5,000 feet of runway to get in the air. If the plane hit about 138 mph, which can happen quickly during takeoff, the crew would have run out of runway, said Mary Schiavo, former inspector general for the federal Transportation Department.
"If you have to abort a takeoff because of a problem with the plane, you don't have a lot of runway left because it uses up so much just on its takeoff roll," Schiavo said.
The jet, which was headed for Van Nuys, Calif., is owned by Global Exec Aviation, a California-based charter company, and was certified to operate last year, Hersman said.
Pilot Sarah Lemmon, 31, of Anaheim Hills, Calif., and co-pilot James Bland, 52, of Carlsbad, Calif., died in the crash. Also killed were Chris Baker, 29, of Studio City, Calif., and Charles Still, 25, of Los Angeles. Baker was an assistant to Barker and Still was a security guard for the musician.
Investigators said they want to speak with Barker and Goldstein for their accounts of the crash, including how they survived. One witness said he discovered the musicians in the street near the fiery wreck as they frantically tried to douse their burning clothes.
Hersman said officials will give the men more time to recuperate. "They're the ones that are going to be able to give us the best firsthand knowledge," she said.
Dr. Fred Mullins, medical director of the Joseph M. Still Burn Center, said the two suffered second- and third-degree burns but had no other injuries from the crash and are in overall good health.
"Anybody who can survive a plane crash is pretty lucky," Mullins told reporters during a news conference Sunday morning.
Barker was burned on his torso and lower body and DJ AM, whose real name is Adam Goldstein, was burned on an arm and a portion of his scalp, according to a statement from the musicians' families released by the hospital. Such injuries can take a year to fully heal, however Mullins said he didn't think it would take that long. (From AP/Popeater)

Florida Court Calls "Saggy Pants" Law Unconsitutional
No, I don't think baggy jeans warrant arrest, but in some instances like in schools some sort of dress code should be enforced. Like, I really don't need to see anyone's underwear while I'm trying to learn about complimentary angles in Geometry!
A Florida judge has lifted “saggy pants” legislation today, one week after a teenager was forced to spend the night behind bars for exposing his underwear in public.
According to the AFP, Palm Beach Circuit Judge Paul Moyle was shocked to find out a 17 year-old boy was jailed because of his style sense.
“Somebody help me,” Moyle said prior to his decision. "We're not talking about exposure of buttocks. No! We're talking about someone who has on pants whose underwear are apparently visible to a police officer who then makes an arrest and the basis is he's then held overnight, no bond."
While some have argued the arrests have been justified by a showing of close to 5,000 signatures for the bill last March, the underlying issue of targeting urban communities has also risen prior to Moyle’s ruling of the law as “unconstitutional.”
As previously reported by SOHH, many US cities have begun placing fines and penalties on individuals caught in public wearing saggy pants.
According to Newsweek, a law sprouted in Flint, Michigan as new police chief David Dicks gave approval to begin arresting “saggers” in addition to threatening them with jail time and fines. He has been quoted calling the popular urban style “immoral self expression” although the look has been around for decades.
As of today, Dicks has only issued warnings, but has promised anyone wearing their pants below their underwear violates the city’s disorderly conduct code and will be punished by 93 days to a year in jail or a fine up to $500.
Dallas, Texas and Atlanta, Georgia are reportedly also considering making saggy pants illegal.
