Video: Obama Gives Tough Speech at NAACP Anniversary Celebration

Stirring. Honest.Controversial.Bold. But what do you think of the speech? Do you agree with President 's view on responsibility? Do you think his words were too harsh?
President had a tough- message for fellow African-Americans on Thursday, urging black to push their children to think beyond dreams of being stars or performers. 's election as the first African-American president buoyed the black community. At the 100th anniversary celebration of the NAACP, the country's oldest civil rights group, he urged blacks to take greater responsibility for themselves and move away from reliance on government programs.

"We need a new mindset, a new set of attitudes -- because one of the most durable and destructive legacies of discrimination is the way that we have internalized a sense of limitation; how so many in our community have come to expect so little of ourselves," he said.
told a packed ballroom at a Manhattan hotel that blacks need to recapture the spirit of the civil rights movement of a half century ago to tackle problems that have struck African-Americans disproportionately - joblessness, spiraling healthcare costs and HIV-AIDS.
"What is required to overcome today's barriers is the same as was needed then...the same commitment. The same sense of urgency. The same sense of sacrifice," he said.
said need to force their children to set aside the video games and get to bed at a reasonable hour, and push them to set their sights beyond such iconic figures as NBA star LeBron James and performer Lil Wayne.

I want them aspiring to be scientists and engineers, doctors and teachers, not just ballers and rappers. I want them aspiring to be a Supreme Court justice. I want them aspiring to be president of the United States," he said. (From Yahoo News/MSNBC)

Moose Falls Out of the Sky

It's a bird! It's a plane! It's a-- WTF?!

Police said a 500-pound moose fell 18 feet to its when it apparently leaped a guardrail on an Interstate 95 overpass and landed on Hinckley Road. Officials learned of the incident when a motorist called the town office shortly after 8 a.m. Tuesday and told assistant town clerk Shirley Bailey that "a moose just fell out of the sky."

Bailey said the driver, who was under the bridge when he spotted the falling moose, was "pretty excited about it."
Police Chief Charles Runnels said the yearling bull probably panicked because of the noise and traffic along I-95 and began running. He said it just picked the wrong spot to jump the guardrail, falling onto a road instead of landing in a field.
A passerby with a wrecker hauled away the carcass. (From AP/AOL News)

LaLa Gets Ejected from Basketball Game

Her version of the story isn't too hard too believe (statement below). Texas can be an interesting place and she just doesn't seem like the type to pick a fight. Post-racial society, huh?

“La La Vazquez became distressed during a heated playoff game, after being verbally attacked by some opposing fans, who were using racial slurs, calling her child crude names and throwing ice cubes. She sent her son home early and was preparing to leave herself when she was physically pushed. Although shaken, she left the premises on her own will and is estatic to be at home with her fiancée and child.”

“Obviously the play-offs games bring out the best and the worst in fans but what happened on Monday night with the racial slurs/threats, verbal attacks on my son and physical attacks to myself by irate fans was unacceptable,” states La La. “The fans were totally out of control. What the cameras captured was me defending myself and didn’t show the that was taking place.” (From Allhiphop.com/NBCDFW.com)

XXL Editor Steps Down

XXL Editor Steps Down It's hard not to notice the trend here. Could this be the end of magazines? XXL Magazine Editor-In-Chief Datwon Thomas has reportedly left his position at the publication after just over a year. While details are in short supply, the news of Thomas' departure hit the net earlier today (May 12).

Word on the curb is that Datwon Thomas has stepped down from his position as Editor-In-Chief of XXL and Executive Editor, Vanessa Satten will resume duties at the top of the masthead. No reason as to why Datwon allegedly left his post, but we'll have more as this story develops. ( Radar)

Thomas took over the magazine in March 2008.

"I won't take the job lightly," he said in a statement last year. "The game is in a tough spot. Lagging sales, declining buzz, warring factions, creative slump and various other factors make the details of my job tougher than expected. I'm here though, ready to grip up and bust some for a culture that's slipping into uncharted territory that looks a little grim. The fact that a lot of good hip-hop is still out there helps make my job that much easier. I, with your help, will find that hip-hop and give it the platform that it rightly deserves. Wish me luck, I'm going in." (Pro Hip Hop)
Prior to XXL, Thomas helped launch King Magazine and helped build it into a prominent urban publication. (Compiled by Sohh.com)
